Affordable, packed with features, and built with Roland’s bulletproof reliability, it became the benchmark for e-kits everywhere. The TD-17 and TD-27 weren’t just popular; they were the standard. If you asked teachers, stores, or even us at Drumeo which electronic kit to start with, these were the ones we pointed to.

They also meant a lot to us personally. For years, we outfitted our Drumeo VIP camps with TD-17s; fifteen drummers, side-by-side, all locking in on the same kit. They’ve been the heartbeat of thousands of lessons, practice sessions, and performances inside our community.

That’s why the release of the new V-Drums 3 and 5 Series has been one of the most anticipated drops in the electronic drumming world. Everyone’s been waiting for the next evolution of these legendary kits, and Roland didn’t disappoint with these new kits from each series: TD313, TD316, VAD316, TD513, TD516, VAD516.

The V-Drums 3 and 5 Series kits bring a complete overhaul in sound, features, and feel. They share the new flagship-level sound engine, a full-color screen (yes, finally!), onboard wireless connectivity, and the kind of expressive touch that blurs the line between digital and acoustic.

And to make things even more exciting, we’re giving away a TD316 and TD516. That’s right… two drummers from the Drumeo community will take home the brand-new TD316 or TD516 and experience them firsthand.

Watch Brandon’s real reaction as he opens the TD516 kit, sets it up, and plays it for the very first time! Then read on for a full breakdown of what makes the new V-Drums the most exciting electronic kits Roland has released in years.

Why These Kits Matter (In Plain English)

  • Unified sound across the 3/5/7 Series. Same new engine and content path across the family. No “junior” library.
  • DW-recorded, multi-layered samples + behavior modeling. Realism without machine-gun artifacts, especially with digital pads.
  • Two ways to play. Use the module sounds or run DW Soundworks on your computer; explore content via Roland Cloud.
  • Wireless workflow. Browse/download content via Roland Cloud Connect; module updates over the air*; Bluetooth audio for play-alongs.
(*Via update available on Oct 16th. Customers will then no longer need an SD card to update.)

Compact footprint, full acoustic-style layout.

So what does that really mean for drummers? It means the cymbals feel more natural, they move, react, and sound closer to traditional acoustic cymbals. The new pads track every nuance, from ghost notes to rimshots, with more sensitivity and less “machine” in the response. Everything feels tighter, cleaner, and more expressive. Simply put, it’s a better version of the TD-17 in almost every practical way.

vdrums 750
The digital pad trio brings top-tier nuance to the 5-Series.

And for players stepping up from a TD-27 or another pro-level kit, the difference is instantly noticeable. The digital pads feel more responsive, the cymbals react more like their acoustic counterparts, and the new sound engine delivers clarity and punch that’s hard to believe from an electronic kit. The feel, sound, and playability have all levelled up light-years beyond the originals.

TD316 vs. TD516: Which One Fits You?

The Verdict

Roland’s TD316 and TD516 aren’t just new kits; they’re gateways. Whether you’re shedding fundamentals in your apartment or recording your first full-length project, these kits take the boundaries off what’s possible with electronic drums. Every nuance, every ghost note, and every dynamic hit translates into genuine musical expression. That means more practice that actually feels like performance and more performance that teaches you something every time you sit down.

vdrums 2049

This launch represents the sweet spot we’ve all been asking for: kits that merge the realism of acoustic drums with the flexibility of the digital world. They make it easier for students to learn without noise limits, for creators to capture their ideas instantly, and for pros to refine their sound without compromise.

So whether you’re stepping up from your first kit, returning to drumming after years away, or expanding your creative setup, the TD316 and TD516 are the next logical leap. They’re not just built for practice. They’re built for progress. And in the end, that’s what Drumeo is all about.

Play more. Learn more. Sound better.

The tools keep evolving… but the mission stays the same.

Aric Improta Hears Nightwish For The First Time https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-aric-hears-nightwish/ Fri, 26 Sep 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53135 Drumeo YouTube Gear Breakdown

What happens when one of the most energetic drummers in the world takes on symphonic metal for the first time? In this special episode of Hear A Song For The First Time, Aric Improta (Fever 333, Night Verses) sits behind the kit to tackle Nightwish’s “Bye Bye Beautiful.” Known for his jaw-dropping showmanship and explosive creativity, Aric approaches the song with intensity, fusing the band’s epic orchestrations with his own fearless style. The gear he chose was perfectly suited for delivering both power and subtlety in equal measure.

In this gear breakdown, we’ll examine the kit, snare, heads, and cymbals that Aric used to create this Drumeo YouTube banger!

Here’s the gear Aric used for this session:

🥁 Kit

The Starclassic Bubinga is known for its deep, punchy low end and warm projection, making it ideal for the orchestral weight of Nightwish’s sound. The 22×18 bass drum provided a thunderous foundation that locked in with the band’s heavy guitar riffs, while the toms gave Aric the resonance and attack needed for big, sweeping fills. In a song with such dramatic dynamics, this kit gave him the power to cut through but also the sensitivity to pull back when needed.

💥 Snare

The brass shell snare gave Aric a bright, cracking attack with plenty of body underneath. In “Bye Bye Beautiful,” the snare drives much of the groove, and this drum delivered a cutting pop that stood out against the layered orchestration. Its responsiveness also allowed Aric to weave in ghost notes and subtleties that added texture to the performance.

🥁 Heads

Remo Emperors are two-ply heads known for their durability and warm tone. On this kit, they gave Aric a fat, controlled sound that kept the toms focused without losing their resonance. Perfect for heavy hitting, these heads helped balance attack and sustain, keeping his fills clear even in the busiest sections.

🛎 Meinl Cymbals

Aric’s cymbal choices added tons of color and contrast to the performance. The Byzance hi-hats provided a crisp, articulate sound that carried the groove, while the Dark Classics Custom crashes cut through the wall of guitars with rich, dark sustain. The Soundcaster Fusion ride gave him both ping and wash for transitions, and the Byzance china brought explosive accents that matched the band’s dramatic stabs. He even added splashes and a trash stack for extra textures, giving his performance the chaotic flair he’s known for.

From massive orchestral hits to syncopated groove transitions, Aric embraced the challenge with his signature mix of technical precision and fearless improvisation. Watching him bring his visual energy and controlled chaos to a Nightwish classic proves just how adaptable his drumming really is.

If you’re looking to practice complex kick and cymbal patterns like Aric, consider using the Drumeo QuietKick. It’s perfect for getting in extra reps without shaking the house.

Eric Harland, Modern Jazz Drumming https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-eric-harland/ Fri, 05 Sep 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53121 Drumeo YouTube Gear Breakdown

In this Drumeo Live session, Brandon Toews sits down with Eric Harland — one of the most creative drummers of his generation and a true innovator in modern jazz. Known for his deep musicality, fearless improvisation, and ability to navigate any musical landscape, Eric opens up about his influences, creative process, and the unique choices that shape his sound.

Between conversations, Eric brings it all to life with jaw-dropping performances of “Travelers” (Aaron Parks), “Circuits” (Chris Potter), “Human Nature” (Michael Jackson), and more. His approach blends tradition with exploration, making him a guiding light for aspiring jazz drummers who want to expand beyond the ordinary.

Let’s explore the Kit, Snares, Cymbals and Heads Eric uses in this Gear Breakdown.

🥁 The Kit

Yamaha Maple Hybrid (Autumn Red)

  • 12×8 rack tom
  • 14×14 floor tom
  • 16×16 floor tom
  • 20×15 bass drum

Maple Hybrid shells deliver warmth, focus, and a balanced note that translates across low and high dynamics. The compact 20×15 bass drum provides a fast response and an open low-end that sits beautifully in modern jazz, fusion, and freer textures.

🛒 Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple (Europe)

💥 The Snares

Two 14×5.5 snare drums

Running a pair of 14×5.5 Yamaha maple snares gives Eric quick access to contrasting voices. One can live in an articulate, crisp tuning for ghost-note clarity, while the second can be set a touch lower for a rounder response. Swapping between them allows instant changes in color during a tune.

🛒 Yamaha Tour Custom Snare Drum (Europe)

🛎 The Cymbals

Zildjian Prototype cymbals

Eric’s cymbal palette leans into complex, musical overtones with a wide dynamic ceiling. Prototype pieces give him unique bells, crash swells, and ride articulation that encourage interaction with the band in real time. Expect quick stick definition at soft volumes and controlled wash when he opens up.

Zildjian “Prototype” cymbals are not available for public purchase. These are one-off or limited experimental designs developed by Zildjian’s master cymbalsmiths, often tailored for specific artists like Eric Harland. Prototypes allow drummers to test new alloys, weights, hammering styles, and tonal profiles before Zildjian decides whether to release them as part of their production line

That means you won’t find these exact cymbals in stores — they are unique to Eric’s setup. If you want to capture a similar sound, Zildjian’s K Constantinople (Europe) and K Custom (Europe) series offer comparable dark, complex, and expressive tones that work beautifully in modern jazz contexts.

🥁 The Heads

Remo Ambassador heads

Ambassadors offer a classic single-ply feel, ideal for touch and tone. They respond instantly to small changes in stick height and position, which is perfect for comping, brush work, and nuanced melodic tom phrasing.

🛒 Remo Ambassador Heads (Europe)

Practice Pick: Quiet Dynamics Anywhere

If you are shedding soft touch, finger control, or fast doubles without waking the neighbors, try the Drumeo QuietPad. The double-sided surface lets you alternate between a snare-like rebound and a quieter, softer feel that is perfect for jazz comping patterns, off-beat accents, and control studies between rehearsals.

Why this setup works: Eric’s rig is compact, musical, and highly reactive. The hybrid shells and Ambassador heads keep the tone open and expressive, the dual snares provide instant color changes, and the prototype cymbals reward dynamics and conversation with the band.

Zedd Hears Pantera For The First Time https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-zedd/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53082 Gear Breakdown: “Cowboys From Hell”

What happens when a world-famous DJ and producer sits behind the kit to tackle one of metal’s most legendary tracks?

Zedd, known for crafting electronic anthems that fill arenas, stepped into unfamiliar territory at Drumeo Studios to hear and play Pantera’s iconic “Cowboys From Hell” for the very first time.

Armed with explosive fills and bone-crushing grooves, Vinnie Paul’s performance on this track is no walk in the park. But Zedd, who’s no stranger to rhythm and energy, took on the challenge with a surprising amount of grit and finesse.

Here’s the gear breakdown of the kit, snare and cymbals that powered his Pantera experience.

The Kit

To channel the spirit of Vinnie Paul, we built a thunderous setup using a Yamaha Recording Custom (Europe) kit in a slick Piano Black finish. Known for its balanced tone and studio-grade clarity, the Recording Custom series brought out the best in both Zedd’s electronic precision and Pantera’s aggressive metal edge.

  • 22” x 16” Bass Drum
  • 10” x 7” Rack Tom
  • 14” x 13” Floor Tom
  • 16” x 15” Floor Tom

The punchy low-end of the kick, paired with the controlled resonance of the toms, gave Zedd a rock-solid foundation to explore Vinnie’s signature sound.

The Snare

Zedd kept things snappy and articulate with a 14” x 5.5” Yamaha RC Aluminum Snare Drum (Europe). This aluminum shell offered a crisp, dry attack with a bright snap, perfect for cutting through the heavy guitar riffs without overpowering the mix. Whether he was cracking backbeats or digging into syncopated accents, this snare delivered the clarity needed to ride the storm of Pantera’s grooves.

The Cymbals

To handle the wide dynamic spectrum of “Cowboys From Hell,” Zedd chose a suite of Sabian cymbals, each offering its own flavor of attack, wash, and decay. From shimmering splashes to explosive crashes, this setup let Zedd build tension and release with precision.

The Stratus Crashes offered smooth, musical wash with plenty of punch, while the AA Holy China and stacked splashes brought in the grit and chaos Pantera is known for. The Anthology Hats provided a crisp and defined “chick” sound, perfect for Zedd’s tight, electronic-inspired timing.

The Verdict

Zedd may be best known for dominating the EDM world, but this video proves he can throw down with the best of them, especially when you give him a killer kit and one of metal’s most iconic songs.

His sense of timing, control, and dynamic shaping translated seamlessly from the booth to the drum throne, making for one of the most surprising and satisfying “first time” performances we’ve had in the studio.

Looking to unleash your inner metalhead? Start by building a versatile kit like this one, and if you’re working on locking down aggressive footwork or high-speed tom runs, consider pairing your practice sessions with the Drumeo QuietPad, a quiet, low-noise practice tool that helps you build speed without waking your neighbors.

Crank it up. Slam those drums. And ride with Cowboys From Hell.

Gear Breakdown: Leprous Grooves & Fills https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-baard-kolstad/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53071 Baard Kolstad

When it comes to technical precision, explosive creativity, and unmatched dynamic range, Baard Kolstad has few equals. As the rhythmic engine behind Leprous, his grooves and fills combine surgical execution with raw emotion, driving the band’s progressive sound to breathtaking heights.

In this special session, Baard and Brandon dive into some of Leprous’ most iconic tracks, breaking down the decisions that shaped the parts and showing exactly how to bring them to life behind the kit. To recreate Baard’s massive, articulate sound, here’s the gear breakdown of the kit, snares, and cymbals he used in the studio.

🥁 The Kit

Baard’s foundation for this session was a Pearl Masters Maple Gum (Europe) kit—a line known for its exceptional balance of warmth and attack. The blend of maple and gumwood delivers full-bodied lows with a smooth top-end, perfect for both subtle ghost notes and thunderous accents.

  • 22×16 Bass Drum
  • 18×16 Floor Tom
  • 16×16 Floor Tom
  • 13×10 Tom
  • 12×9 Tom
  • 10×8 Tom

💥 Snares

Baard brought out three distinct snare voices to cover the wide dynamic range of Leprous’ material. The 14×5 Sensitone Maple Snare offers a crisp, woody response ideal for articulate sticking. The 14×6.5 Reference Series Brass Snare brings a fat, powerful punch, while the 13×3 Brass Piccolo Snare cuts through the mix with bright, focused snap—perfect for intricate accents.

🛎 Cymbals

For his cymbal setup, Baard leaned on the dark, complex tones of Sabian’s HHX line, blended with the cutting clarity of the AAX series. This combination gave him the tonal versatility to move from atmospheric textures to explosive accents in a heartbeat.

The Verdict

Baard Kolstad’s setup strikes the perfect balance between tonal variety, projection, and sensitivity. The Pearl Masters Maple Gum kit delivers the warm, resonant foundation for Leprous’ complex arrangements, while his snare trio covers every dynamic shade—from whisper-quiet ghost notes to stadium-level backbeats. The Sabian cymbals add depth, shimmer, and bite, allowing Baard to weave between grooves and fills with effortless precision. If you’re aiming to master both the technical and expressive sides of drumming, this gear setup is a masterclass in versatility.

If you’re looking to practice Baard’s lightning-fast kick patterns without shaking the walls, the Drumeo QuietKick is a perfect solution. It lets you develop speed, control, and endurance on the bass drum while keeping the volume low—ideal for late-night woodshedding.

Gear Breakdown: Cody Ash Hears Slayer For The First Time https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-cody-ash-slayer/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53067 “Seasons In The Abyss” – Slayer

What happens when a country-rock drummer dives headfirst into the dark, aggressive world of thrash metal?

In this episode, Cody Ash — best known as the powerhouse drummer for Jelly Roll — hears Slayer’s “Seasons In The Abyss” for the very first time. It’s a masterclass in contrast: Cody’s roots are steeped in groove-heavy, arena-sized country anthems, while Slayer’s legendary track is a high-octane onslaught of technical riffs, explosive drums, and relentless energy.

Armed with his own kit, Cody doesn’t just listen — he feels his way through the song, responding instinctively to the track’s evolving dynamics, tempo shifts, and blistering fills. It’s an honest look at what it takes to adapt across genres, and how a drummer’s voice can stay true even in unfamiliar territory.

Explore the gear breakdown from this Drumeo YouTube performance, and learn about the kit, snare and cymbal choices Cody uses to Slay-er this track.

🥁 The Kit

Cody Ash played a DW Design Series kit in a classic Tobacco Burst finish. Known for their balance of quality and affordability, the Design Series drums deliver rich, resonant tones with plenty of attack — perfect for both his usual stadium sound and the metallic edge of Slayer’s aesthetic.

  • 22” x 18” Bass Drum
  • 8” x 7” Tom
  • 10” x 8” Tom
  • 12” x 9” Tom
  • 16” x 16” Floor Tom
  • 18” x 16” Floor Tom
  • 20” x 12” Gong Drum

If you’re looking for a versatile pro-level kit that punches in any genre, this DW Design Series kit (Europe) is a solid foundation.

💥 The Snare Drums

Cody opted for two distinctive snares to give him tonal options — one for crack and one for bark.

  • 14” x 6” DW Collector’s Series Snare (Europe Alt.) in Tobacco Fade over Mapa Burl — this one brings warmth and depth, ideal for broader backbeats.
  • 14” x 6” DW Concept Series Black Steel Snare (NA) — tuned tighter, this snare delivers a sharper, more cutting tone, perfect for Slayer’s heavier moments.

Both snares give Cody the dynamic range he needs to shift from subtle ghost notes to thunderous accents. You can also explore a similar metal snare option like the PDP Concept Series Steel Snare (Europe) for that crisp, cutting Slayer vibe.

🛎 The Cymbals

To match Slayer’s ferocity and stay true to his expressive playing style, Cody assembled a Zildjian-heavy cymbal setup loaded with color, trash, and articulation. His choices reflect a mix of aggression and musicality — essential for navigating the chaotic grooves of thrash metal.

These cymbals offer a palette of tones — from the smooth sizzle of the K Light Ride to the trashy bite of stacked splashes and China cymbals.

👨‍⚖️ The Verdict

Watching Cody Ash dive into Slayer territory is a beautiful reminder of what drumming is all about: musical curiosity, fearless exploration, and emotional connection.

Even though this track sits miles away from Cody’s typical setlist, his interpretation feels authentic. He brings his own vocabulary to the table, showing that great drummers aren’t confined by genre — they’re defined by feel.

Jelly Roll Drummer Hears Slayer For The First Time nonadult
Gear Breakdown: The Genius Of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-genius-of-stairway-to-heaven/ Fri, 25 Jul 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53060 There’s no song more iconic, no drum part more mythologized, than “Stairway To Heaven.” And when it comes to drumming legends, few loom larger than John Bonham. In this video, Brandon Toews dissects the power, precision, and presence of Bonzo’s playing—on a kit modelled after Bonham’s own thunderous setup.

Let’s take a look at the gear breakdown of what Kit, Snare, Hardware and Cymbals Brandon used to channel the sound and feel of this legendary track.

🥁 Drum Kit

To honor Bonham’s towering presence behind the kit, Brandon played a 1969 Ludwig Classic Maple kit in a stunning green sparkle finish—built to sing and roar with vintage authenticity.

  • 14×10” Tom – Tuned high for melodic fills that still punch through the mix.
  • 16×16” Floor Tom – That signature warm Ludwig thud.
  • 18×16” Floor Tom – Deep and thunderous—perfect for Bonham-style triplet grooves.
  • 26×14” Bass Drum – The engine of Bonham’s groove, giving massive low-end presence and a thunderous tone.

This setup mirrors the drum dimensions Bonham was known for, emphasizing depth, projection, and tonal clarity. The 26″ bass drum in particular is essential to capturing his unmistakable drive and weight.

Obviously the 1969 kit is no longer in production, but you can get that same warm tone and sparkle finish from Sweetwater and Thomann (Europe) by way of the:

Ludwig Classic Maple Pro Beat 3-piece Shell Pack (Europe)
Add on: Ludwig 18×16″ Floor Tom

💥 Snare Drum

At the heart of the backbeat is the 14×6.5” Ludwig Supraphonic snare—a model Bonham himself famously used. Its aluminum shell gives it that dry crack and full-bodied resonance that made his ghost notes and backbeats feel alive. From whisper-soft drags to explosive rimshots, this snare delivers the dynamic response necessary for Bonham’s expressive style.

If you’re looking to add Bonham’s signature snare sound to your own setup, the Ludwig Supraphonic L402 (Europe) is an essential addition.

🛠 Hardware

Brandon used vintage Ludwig flat-based hardware paired with the legendary 1960s Ludwig Speed King pedal—a favorite of Bonham himself. The Speed King’s smooth yet springy response was key to Bonham’s signature footwork, especially his rapid-fire bass drum bursts and triplet patterns.

Fun fact: Bonham was known for using this single pedal to deliver flurries of bass drum notes that sounded like they came from a double pedal.

Modern Option: Ludwig L203 Speed King (Europe)

🛎 Cymbals – Paiste Power

Bonham’s cymbal setup was bold, bright, and commanding. To recreate that wash and crash-heavy palette, Brandon used a combination of Paiste 2002 and Giant Beat series cymbals:

These cymbals deliver the shimmering power Bonham was known for—especially in the crashing crescendo of “Stairway’s” final movement.

Want to Channel Your Inner Bonham?

If you’re working on developing bass drum speed and foot control like Bonzo, we recommend practicing on the Drumeo QuietKick. It’s a low-volume solution that still gives you the rebound and resistance of a real pedal, perfect for nailing fast single strokes and triplets—without shaking the walls.

The Verdict

This kit is more than just vintage eye candy—it’s a time machine. Every drum and cymbal was carefully chosen to replicate the sound and vibe of Bonham’s most legendary studio recordings. The result? A thunderous, articulate, and unmistakably Zeppelin sound that reminds us why John Bonham’s playing still influences drummers over 50 years later.

From the power of the 26″ kick to the shimmer of the Giant Beat crash, this gear breakdown captures the essence of one of rock’s most revered drum performances.

Gear Breakdown: Creed Grooves & Fills https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-creed-grooves-and-fills/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53051 Scott Phillips – Creed

Scott Phillips, the rhythmic powerhouse behind Creed, didn’t just play drums—he crafted grooves that became the spine of some of the most anthemic rock tracks of the late ‘90s and early 2000s. In this exclusive Drumeo YouTube video, Scott reflects on the songs that defined a generation and demonstrates the thoughtful, explosive, and sometimes surprisingly subtle playing that helped shape Creed’s unmistakable sound.

From bone-crushing fills in “My Own Prison” to the deceptively simple yet satisfying pulse in “With Arms Wide Open,” Phillips’ playing walks the line between arena-rock grandeur and surgical musicality. Let’s dive into the gear he used to recreate these legendary grooves.

In this Gear Breakdown, we take a look at the Kit, Snare, Cymbals and Heads that Scott used to recreate the iconic Creed songs from their discography.

🥁 Drum Kit

Scott played a DW Design Series kit in a beautiful Tobacco Burst finish—combining DW’s unmistakable shell quality with a modern, punchy tone that’s perfect for both studio work and live performances.

  • 22” x 18” Bass Drum
  • 18” x 16” Floor Tom
  • 16” x 14” Floor Tom
  • 12” x 9” Tom
  • 10” x 8” Tom

This setup offers deep, booming lows from the floor toms and a balanced midrange from the rack toms, all tied together with a bass drum that delivers a clean, focused thump.

Want a similar vibe? Check out the DW Design Series 4-piece Shell Pack – Tobacco Burst (Europe) from Sweetwater.

💥 Snare Drum

To cut through Creed’s massive wall of guitars, Scott relied on a 14” x 6.5” DW Concept Series Black Nickel over Steel Snare. This drum delivers the bite, crack, and body needed for the heavier tracks without sacrificing sensitivity.

You can find a great match with the DW Design Series Brass Snare Drum – 6.5 inches x 14 inches, Polished Black Nickel (Europe).

🛎 Cymbals

Scott’s cymbal selection is a brilliant blend of clarity, power, and presence—perfect for rock. The Zildjian A Custom series dominates this setup, providing bright tones and powerful projection.

These cymbals provide everything from shimmering splashes and aggressive crashes to that unmistakable bell tone courtesy of the Zil-Bel.

🥁 Drumheads

Scott used a full set of Evans Drum Heads to dial in his sound:

This head combo gives him durability, focus, and the controlled resonance needed for Creed’s powerful arrangements. The EMAD Heavyweight in particular offers deep, punchy low-end without excessive overtones—a favorite for heavy hitters.

The Verdict

Scott Phillips’ kit is a perfect reflection of his drumming—powerful, precise, and meticulously crafted. The DW Design kit gives his fills and grooves a commanding presence, while the A Custom cymbals bring the clarity and punch needed to cut through any mix. Pair that with responsive Evans heads and a snare that can bark or whisper, and you’ve got a setup worthy of Creed’s legacy.

Feeling inspired to dive into the world of rock drumming? If you’re working on replicating Scott’s thunderous grooves and want to practice without disturbing the neighbors, the Drumeo QuietKick is the perfect practice companion.

Now crank up “Higher” and channel your inner rock god.

Gear Breakdown: Will Hunt Hears “In The Stone” For The First Time https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-will-hunt-hears-in-the-stone/ Fri, 18 Jul 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53046 Evanescence Drummer Tackles The Funk

Will Hunt is no stranger to epic, heavy-hitting rock anthems — as the longtime drummer for Evanescence, his grooves are explosive, precise, and powerful.

So what happens when you drop him into a world of horn stabs, syncopation, and undeniable groove? In this Drumeo video, Will hears and plays through “In The Stone” by Earth, Wind & Fire for the very first time.

The result? An unexpected journey through tight pocket grooves, accents, and fills that demand restraint, feel, and finesse — all while staying true to Will’s unmistakable energy.

In this gear breakdown, we examine the Kit, Snare, Cymbals, and Hardware Will uses in the Drumeo YouTube video to put his spin on this classic.

🥁 Will Hunt’s Drum Kit

For this video, Will laid down the funk using a Pearl Masters Series drum kit — a tried-and-true workhorse known for its clarity, punch, and resonance. The double bass setup gives him all the firepower he’s used to, but the dynamic range of these shells makes them just as comfortable in a funk context.

  • 2 x 22” x 18” Bass Drums
  • 18” x 16” Floor Tom
  • 16” x 16” Floor Tom
  • 12” x 9” Tom
  • 10” x 8” Tom

Want a kit that can handle both the thunder of Evanescence and the groove of Earth, Wind & Fire? The Pearl Masters Maple Complete Series (Europe) offers professional tone and durability with stunning finish options.

💥 Snare Drum

Will used a 14” x 6.5” Pearl Reference Series Brass Snare — a snare that brings serious crack with deep body and projection. Brass shells like this one are a go-to for drummers who need cut and character, and it handled the articulate ghost notes and backbeat punches of “In The Stone” beautifully.

If you’re after a versatile, loud-yet-sensitive snare with a bit of vintage flare, check out the Pearl Sensitone Brass Snare Drum (Europe) – a modern classic.

🛎 Cymbals

Will’s cymbal setup is all about power and presence, but with enough shimmer to fit the Earth, Wind & Fire vibe. He blends Zildjian’s Z Customs, A Customs, and S Series to deliver cutting crashes, articulate hats, and a mega ride that really speaks.

Need cymbals that can punch through guitars but still groove? Try mixing A Custom Crashes with S Series packs (Europe) to build a versatile, modern rock setup.

🛠 Hardware

Holding it all together is Pearl’s legendary hardware. Will’s rig included Pearl Eliminator Pedals and 800 Series stands, known for their smooth action and indestructible design. For drummers who demand responsiveness without sacrificing reliability, it’s hard to beat this combo.

The Verdict

Will Hunt brought power, groove, and musicality to an unexpected challenge — and the gear he used delivered at every turn. From the thunder of his twin bass drums to the crystalline attack of his Zildjian crashes, every element of his setup was dialed for controlled chaos and tight pocket playing.

If you’re looking to explore funk grooves with rock aggression or just want a kit that adapts to whatever your gig throws at you, Will’s setup is a killer blueprint. And if you’re working through tricky grooves or want to improve your timing and feel, consider practicing with the Drumeo QuietPad and Pad Stand — perfect for locking in tight grooves without waking the neighbors.

Gear Breakdown: Eden Bahar Hears Smashing Pumpkins For The First Time https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-eden-bahar-hears-smashing-pumpkins/ Fri, 04 Jul 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53035 Best known for his thunderous grooves and theatrical precision with Cirque du Soleil, we packed up the team, travelled to Seattle and joined Eden Bahar on the ‘Kooza’ stage to hear and watch him perform the iconic Smashing Pumpkins track “Tonight, Tonight” for the very first time.

The result? A dynamic fusion of orchestral rock meets show-stopping flair. To capture the cinematic vibe of the song, Eden brought in a massive kit worthy of the big top—and big sound.

Let’s explore the kit, snare, cymbals and other gear Eden used in his Drumeo YouTube rendition, in another Drumeo gear breakdown.

🥁 Drum Kit

Eden played a Ludwig Classic Maple kit, renowned for its warm tone and full-bodied resonance. Here’s the setup he used for this session:

  • 10” & 12” rack toms
  • 14” floor tom (mounted on the left side under the hi-hat—perfect for orchestral-style swells)
  • 16” & 18” floor toms
  • 2 x 24” bass drums—because sometimes one just isn’t enough

This configuration allowed Eden to sculpt a huge, cinematic canvas while staying agile enough for the softer, emotional parts of the track. Sweetwater and Thomann have you covered with the base kit to get you started building this monster.

Ludwig Classic Maple Kit (Europe)

💥 Snare

The heart of Eden’s backbeat came from a 14×7” Ludwig Anniversary model snare drum, delivering a crisp attack with rich body, ideal for both ghost note finesse and explosive accents. Its deeper shell gave him extra punch to cut through the orchestration of “Tonight, Tonight.”

Ludwig Black Brass 14×8″ (Europe)

🛎 Cymbals

For cymbals, Eden leaned into the shimmering brilliance of Paiste 2002 series, a perfect match for the orchestral rock textures of The Smashing Pumpkins. His setup included:

These cymbals are known for their clarity and musicality at high volumes—something that gave Eden the presence he needed without overpowering the arrangement.

🛠 Hardware & Accessories

Everything was secured via a Gibraltar rack system (Europe), allowing him to lock in multiple toms and cymbals with surgical precision. He also used DW 9000 pedals (Europe) for both hi-hat and bass drums—legendary for their smooth action and road-tested durability.

💪 Practice Essentials

If you’re looking to improve your control on larger setups like Eden’s—or simply want to work on dynamic touch and consistency—you’ll love the Drumeo QuietPad. Pair it with the Pad Stand for the perfect portable setup. These tools are excellent for working on soft snare rolls and explosive accents, just like the ones Eden used throughout this performance.

The Verdict

Eden Bahar’s take on “Tonight, Tonight” brought all the drama and sensitivity you’d expect from a Cirque du Soleil veteran. With a kit built for maximum impact and cymbals that shimmered like a string section, Eden captured both the grandeur and intimacy of the track. Whether you’re inspired by his setup or his performance, one thing is clear: great music deserves a great drummer, and Eden delivered.

Gear Breakdown: The Genius of The Rolling Stones’ “Get Off Of My Cloud” https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-genius-of-the-rolling-stones/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53030 Charlie Watts wasn’t a drummer who demanded attention, but he always earned it.

In The Rolling Stones’ “Get Off Of My Cloud,” he anchors the chaos with a relentless backbeat that’s deceptively simple but full of nuance. The kind of part that makes you nod your head without realizing it. That’s Charlie; no frills, no fills, just groove.

In this video, Drumeo’s Brandon Toews digs deep into the mind of Watts, dissecting his iconic drum part and performing it on a setup inspired by Charlie’s legendary aesthetic and tone.

This Gear Breakdown takes a closer look at the kit, snare and cymbals that bring this tribute to life.

🥁 Drum Kit

To capture that unmistakable vintage tone, Brandon used a Gretsch USA Custom kit in a sleek Nitron Black finish. While Charlie played several kits over the years — often Ludwig or Gretsch — this setup channels the sound and spirit of those early Stones sessions.

  • 22” x 16” Bass Drum
  • 12” x 9” Rack Tom
  • 16” x 16” Floor Tom

🛒 Gretsch USA Custom Kit (Europe)

The bass drum gives just enough punch without overpowering the mix, while the toms sing with warm, controlled resonance — a must for replicating Charlie’s subtle dynamic shifts.

💥 Snare Drum

One of the most important elements of Charlie Watts’ sound is the snare — and for this video, Brandon used a vintage Gretsch Chrome Over Brass 4160 snare drum (14” x 5”).

This model is known for its dry, crisp articulation — perfect for Charlie’s laid-back, almost jazz-informed approach to rock drumming. Every backbeat snaps, but never shouts. If you’re chasing that same vibe, a modern brass snare with a similar depth and shell composition will get you close.

Gretsch Drums USA Bell Brass Snare Drum – 5 x 14-inch (Europe)

🛎 Cymbals

Charlie wasn’t known for massive cymbal setups — just the right tools for the job. For this tribute, Brandon used Istanbul Agop Traditional Series cymbals to recreate Charlie’s smoky, washy tones. These cymbals respond beautifully to light touch and deliver complex, vintage-style character.

Sweetwater doesn’t carry the Istanbul AGOP cymbals, but offers alternative Turkish, Meinl, and Zildjian cymbals to achieve a similar sound. Thomann (Europe) does have the line, so those are linked below.

The Verdict

Charlie Watts’ brilliance was never about speed or flash — it was about feel. The ability to drive a song forward without ever getting in the way. This kit, with its warm tones and responsive cymbals, honors that legacy with every note.

If you’re chasing that same tasteful pocket, take inspiration from Charlie’s musicality — and maybe a few of these gear choices. And if you’re looking for ways to work on your own groove and time, try locking in with the Drumeo QuietKick — a low-volume kick practice pad that lets you develop your feel without disturbing the neighbors.

🛎 The Cymbals

Sabian

Shannon’s cymbal setup is designed for high-impact drama. The AAX X-Plosion crashes explode with brightness and decay, while the 14” hats offer crisp response and tight control. The HHX Raw Bell Ride adds depth with a dry, articulate bell—perfect for atmospheric patterns and aggressive builds alike.

⚡ Electronics

Roland

Shannon’s hybrid setup takes full advantage of modern electronic tools. The TD-50X module powers five PD-8 pads, loaded with textures, loops, and atmospheric samples that blend seamlessly with his acoustic playing. A custom pad (made from wood, a yoga mat, and a rubber pad) rounds out the rig, while the KT-10 kick trigger allows precision layering of electronic kicks and effects.

🛠 Other Gear

Built for feel and durability, Shannon’s DW 9000 pedals offer unmatched responsiveness. His kit is fully outfitted with Remo heads for versatile tone across all shells. And everything is mounted to a DW Rack System—sturdy, modular, and ready for the demands of arena-sized performance. It keeps the hybrid setup organized and rock solid.

The Verdict

This is the setup behind Shannon Leto’s unmistakable sound—a thunderous acoustic kit fused with electronic versatility, built for cinematic rock. From the deep toms and expressive snare to the ambient textures of his electronics, every element is tuned for maximum impact.

Gear Breakdown: The Iconic Drumming Behind “Isolation” https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-iconic-drumming-sepultura/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53010 Sepultura – Eloy Casagrande

When Eloy Casagrande joined Sepultura in 2011, he brought with him an untamed fire. Aggressive. Surgical. Relentless. The kind of drummer who doesn’t just play a groove—he devours it.

In this explosive revisit to the Quadra era track “Isolation,” Eloy sat behind a beastly kit built to echo his old touring rig. And once he started hitting… well, you’ll want to stand back.

In this gear breakdown, we explore the kit, snare, cymbals, and heads used in the Drumeo YouTube video.

🥁 The Drum Kit

Eloy’s setup starts with a Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch kit in a stunning Satin Sapphire Fade finish. Known for its fusion of warmth (from walnut) and punch (from birch), this hybrid shell delivers exactly the kind of projection and clarity needed for thrash and groove metal alike.

  • 10″x8″ Rack Tom
  • 12″x9″ Rack Tom
  • 16″x16″ Floor Tom
  • 18″x16″ Floor Tom
  • 22″x16″ Bass Drum

Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch kits at Sweetwater (Europe)

💥 The Snare

For this session, Eloy leaned into a Tama S.L.P. 14×5 Bronze Snare. This drum bites hard with metallic authority but still allows for a touch of warmth that sits nicely under his more ghost-noted flourishes. A perfect match for both blast beats and subtle texture.

Check out the Tama S.L.P. Bronze Snare on Sweetwater (Europe)

🛎 The Cymbals

If the drums are the engine, the cymbals are the exhaust flames. Eloy’s setup is sprawling, dark, and deeply aggressive—dominated by Paiste’s Masters, 602, Rude, and PSTX lines. Each cymbal contributes a distinct character: from warm and complex crashes to piercing bells and savage stacks.

💀 The Heads

Casagrande’s tone is precise, full, and ferocious, thanks in large part to his choice of Evans drumheads. His toms are topped with G2 Clears for focused attack and durability. The snare is equipped with a Heavyweight head—Evans’ toughest snare batter, perfect for his punishing playing. The bass drum is fitted with an EMAD Heavyweight, delivering deep, clicky punch tailored for metal.

The Verdict

Eloy Casagrande doesn’t just play metal—he embodies it. This setup, with its dark cymbals, hybrid-shelled fury, and unrelenting snare punch, is perfectly crafted to unleash the chaos of “Isolation.”

And while most drummers would be happy to survive a song like this… Eloy thrives in the chaos. Every fill, every blast, every cymbal choke is a masterclass in power and control.

If you’re looking to recreate this level of sonic intensity, this rig is a damn good place to start.

Gear Breakdown: Mike Portnoy Challenges Max Portnoy to Learn “Honor Thy Father” https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-max-portnoy-learns/ Fri, 13 Jun 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=53005 What do you get when one of the most iconic drummers in progressive metal challenges his son to play one of his most intense songs? A Father’s Day moment like no other.

In this special episode, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, The Winery Dogs) tasks his son, Max Portnoy (Tallah), with learning and performing the beastly Dream Theater track “Honor Thy Father”. The twist? Max has never played the song before.

This isn’t just about chops, it’s about legacy. Watching Max navigate one of the most punishing tracks in Mike’s catalog, under the watchful eye of his father, is equal parts heartwarming and jaw-dropping. And while Mike doesn’t get behind the kit this time, his legendary “Dream Monster” setup makes a full appearance, reminding us why he’s one of the most revered names in progressive drumming.

In this Gear Breakdown, we will explore the massive kit, multiple pedals and the plethora of cymbals Max had at his disposal to recreate this Dream Theater masterpiece in an epic Drumeo YouTube video.

🥁 Drum Kit

Mike Portnoy brought out the big guns for this one, his iconic “Dream Monster” Tama Starclassic Maple kit in a custom purple-to-white fade finish. This sprawling setup isn’t just a visual statement; it’s a percussive playground built for extreme progressive metal. Mounted entirely on a custom Tama rack, every piece is carefully placed for maximum efficiency and expression.

This configuration gives Mike the tonal range and flexibility to pull off the lightning-fast fills, thunderous double-kick patterns, and nuanced accents that Dream Theater fans know and love.

Obviously, this kit isn’t available off the shelf, and the sheer size of it would be a marathon of collecting. We have linked the basics and some special items above to get you started.

🚗 Pedals

Speed Cobra pedals are designed for maximum velocity and power with minimal effort, essential for Mike’s intricate footwork and relentless double-kick phrasing.

🛎 Cymbals (Sabian)

Mike’s cymbal setup is a sonic arsenal filled with crashes, splashes, stacks, chinas, and custom Max signature models, most of them Sabian, of course. It’s a dense forest of metal, offering a huge range of dynamics and textures:

Whether it’s a brutal crash, a subtle splash, or one of his signature Max Stacks, each cymbal serves a specific purpose in Mike’s complex arrangements—designed for color, chaos, and clarity.

The Verdict

This kit isn’t just over-the-top, it’s *engineered* for progressive madness. Watching Max Portnoy rise to the challenge of playing “Honor Thy Father” is a treat for drumming fans and a heartfelt nod to generational talent. The technicality, the intensity, and the sheer pressure of learning a song this complex, while your dad watches, is next level.

With Father’s Day around the corner, this episode hits home in all the right ways. It’s not just about playing fast, it’s about passing the torch.

Gear Breakdown: Brittany Bowman Hears Scorpions For The First Time https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-brittany-bowman-hears-scorpions/ Fri, 06 Jun 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=52998 When Brittany Bowman stepped into the studio to hear Scorpions for the first time, no one was quite sure what to expect.

But what followed was a full-blown hard rock explosion. Scorpions’ “Blackout” is fast, loud, and absolutely relentless—and Brittany delivered the goods with groove, power, and unshakable confidence.

To tackle the high-octane rhythms and thunderous backbeats of this track, Brittany sat behind a rock-solid Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit and dialed in a cymbal setup that delivered both sizzle and sheer muscle.

Let’s Gear Breakdown the Kit, Snare, and the Cymbals Brittany used to slay this track!

🥁 The Kit

Brittany used a Tama Starclassic Bubinga in a stunning Red to Black Sparkle Fade finish. Bubinga wood is known for its deep, rich tone and powerful low-end punch—perfect for rock tracks that demand presence and cut.

  • 22×16” Bass Drum – A classic size with a commanding boom and fast response, ideal for fast footwork and heavy accents.
  • 12×9” Tom – Sharp, defined, and punchy—great for those rapid fills and quick transitions.
  • 16×14” Floor Tom – Provides the growl and bottom-end to balance out the upper register, anchoring the fills with a satisfying thud.

This kit speaks with authority—every tom hit cuts through the mix, and the bass drum thunders underneath Brittany’s precise, energetic playing.

🛒 Tama Starclassic Maple Alternative (Europe)

💥 The Snare

For this session, Brittany leaned on a 14×8” Tama Starphonic Steel Snare. This snare is all about projection and articulation.

The 8” depth gives it a fat, full-bodied sound while the steel shell keeps it snappy and loud. Whether she’s cracking backbeats or ghosting subtle textures in the verses, this snare commands attention. The die-cast hoops and unique Grooved Hoop design also help keep rimshots crisp and focused—ideal for the aggressive nature of “Blackout.”

🛒 Tama Starphonic Snare 14×7″ Alternative (Europe)

🛎 The Cymbals

To handle the sharp accents and explosive dynamics of the track, Brittany’s cymbal choices were both musical and powerful—centered around the Sabian HHX Complex series, known for their dark, nuanced character and modern attack.

🛒 14” HHX Complex Hats (Europe) – These hi-hats offer a smoky, defined chick with plenty of articulation. They handle both driving eighth notes and slick open textures with ease.

🛒 18” HHX Complex Thin Crash (Europe) – Fast, buttery, and explosive. This crash opens up quickly and decays smoothly—great for dynamic build-ups and quick accents.

🛒 19” HHX Complex Thin Crash (Europe) – Slightly larger and darker than the 18”, this crash brings an added depth and body to fills and choruses.

🛒 21” HHX Complex Thin Ride (Europe) – The definition of smoky elegance. This ride offers a controlled wash with a complex sustain—perfect for laying into crash-riding while still maintaining stick clarity.

🛒 18” HHX Chinese (Europe)– Adds just the right amount of trash and bite for those big explosive hits. A great choice for adding spice to transitions and breakdowns.

Sabian’s HHX line brought a refined chaos to the mix—dark, complex tones with modern responsiveness that matched Brittany’s playing perfectly.

The Verdict

Brittany Bowman didn’t just sit in on a classic rock track—she tore through it with passion and precision, and her gear choices played a huge role in shaping the sound. The Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit provided rock-solid tone and responsiveness. Her Tama Starphonic Steel snare cut through like a razor. And those Sabian HHX cymbals? Dark, expressive, and explosively musical.

Gear Breakdown: The Genius of “Pneuma” by Tool https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-genius-of-pneuma/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 11:50:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=52990 Complex rhythms. Polyrhythmic textures. Esoteric time signatures.
Tool’s “Pneuma” isn’t just a song—it’s a transcendent sonic ritual. And at its core is Danny Carey, the high priest of progressive drumming.

In this Drumeo YouTube video, Brandon Toews breaks down and performs this modern masterpiece, channelling Carey’s mystical energy through an equally mythical kit setup. The drums aren’t just instruments—they’re part of the ceremony.

In this gear breakdown, we explore the kit, a ton of cymbals and the accessories that Brandon uses to recreate Carey’s epic sound.

🥁 Drum Kit

Gretsch BroadKaster – Blue Sparkle Finish

Brandon Toews performs “Pneuma” on a jaw-dropping Gretsch BroadKaster kit in Blue Sparkle—an homage to the magnitude of Danny Carey’s setup. At the heart of this configuration are two kick drums: a 22” with a custom upside-down Fear Inoculum graphic head, and a thunderous 24” featuring the same artwork. The dual-kick configuration mirrors Carey’s own power and dynamic control, offering both punch and depth.

Mounted toms include an 8” and 10” rack tom, carefully tuned to provide the tonal nuance needed for Carey’s melodic tom phrasing. A 14” REMO RotoTom adds that unmistakable midrange attack that Danny Carey uses to weave in rhythmic motifs and tribal cadences. Two floor toms—14” and 16”—anchor the low-end with ominous thuds, perfectly complementing the ritualistic nature of the song.

But it doesn’t stop there. A mounted 22” bass drum functions as a gong drum, delivering a thunderous, resonant boom that reverberates through the mix. This gong drum isn’t just for show—it’s a signature part of Carey’s setup, adding cinematic drama and low-frequency dimension during key transitions. The overall build is more than a drum kit—it’s a percussion temple.

  • 22” Bass Drum (with custom Fear Inoculum graphic head – upside down)
  • 24” Bass Drum (with custom Fear Inoculum graphic head)
  • 8” Tom
  • 10” Tom
  • 14” Floor Tom
  • 16” Floor Tom
  • 14” REMO RotoTom
  • 22” Gong Drum (mounted bass drum)

🛎 Cymbals

Istanbul Agop (except ride)

Carey’s cymbal choices have always been unorthodox, and this recreation follows suit with a beautifully chaotic array—primarily from Istanbul Agop, with a standout ride cymbal from Paiste.

The centerpiece is the 22” Paiste Danny Carey Signature MONAD Ride in a bold purple finish. This ride isn’t just visually striking—it offers a dry, cutting articulation with a crystalline bell tone that cuts through the densest polyrhythms.

Three distinct crash cymbals—an 18” Xist with a 6” Xist bell inverted on top, an 18” Power Crash with an 8” bell, and a 20” Xist with a 7” Turk bell—serve both tonal and textural roles. Each is mounted with inverted bells, creating a shimmering, raw attack that adds to the percussive unpredictability.

The two massive chinas (24” and 22” Xist) create explosive bursts of white noise, while an 18” Xist China stacked with a 12” splash provides quick, trashy accents. There’s also a uniquely tuned splash set—10” over an inverted 8”—that offers quick, high-end punctuation to phrases.

Brandon’s Istanbul Agop Cymbals are available in Europe through Thomann, but aren’t available on Sweetwater, so the closest Paiste equivalents are linked below

🎒 Accessories

To top it off, Brandon uses various tuned bells (6”, 7”, 8”) that shimmer with metallic clarity and a 26” Istanbul Wind Gong for those transcendent moments when the kit becomes something more than rhythmic—it becomes spiritual. Paiste equivalents linked below

The Verdict

This setup is nothing short of ritualistic. Every drum, cymbal, and bell is meticulously chosen to mirror the esoteric energy that Danny Carey brings to Tool’s performances. It’s a kit built not just for sound, but for storytelling—one that bridges the gap between music and mysticism.

Brandon Toews does more than replicate; he channels. His execution of “Pneuma” isn’t just a technical display—it’s a reverent tribute to one of the most revered drummers in modern music. From the fluid transitions to the towering dynamics, this performance captures the sacred geometry of Carey’s playing. If you’re a fan of Tool, progressive rock, or drumming as an art form, this breakdown is essential viewing.

Gear Breakdown: Giulliana Merello Hears The Police For The First Time https://www.drumeo.com/beat/gear-breakdown-giulliana-merello-hears-police/ Fri, 23 May 2025 11:45:00 +0000 https://www.drumeo.com/beat/?p=52979 “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”

What happens when a Latin jazz fusion powerhouse hears Stewart Copeland’s iconic grooves for the very first time?

Giulliana Merello, known for her explosive style and fearless creativity, took on a new challenge: react to and perform “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by The Police — a band that blends rock, reggae, and punk with precision and personality.

From the moment the piano hits and Sting’s voice kicks in, Copeland’s drumming takes a backseat… and then slams the gas. His accents and hi-hat work are nothing short of iconic. This track balances subtle syncopation with explosive choruses — perfect for someone like Giulliana to reinterpret with her unique voice behind the kit.

In this gear breakdown, we go through the Kit, Snare and Cymbals that Giulliana uses during her Drumeo YouTube video to bring her flair to this iconic track.

Giulliana’s Drum Kit – Gretsch

Giulliana performed on a stunning Gretsch BroadKaster in Blue Sparkle — a shell pack known for its warm, vintage-inspired tone and dynamic response. These drums feature a 3-ply maple/poplar/maple shell formula with internal reinforcement rings, delivering the controlled low-end thump and rounded attack that make Copeland’s grooves feel alive.

Her tom configuration gives her flexibility to move melodically around the kit, with tight articulation on the 10” and 12” rack toms and a thunderous response from the 16” floor tom. The 22” kick drum provides the punchy low-end needed to anchor the groove without overpowering the mix — ideal for a track that’s rhythmically complex yet melodically light on its feet.

  • 10” x 8” Tom
  • 12” x 8” Tom
  • 16” x 16” Floor Tom
  • 22” x 16” Bass Drum

Gretsch Broadkaster 4-Piece (Europe)

The Snare – Gretsch

At the heart of the performance is Giulliana’s 14” x 5” snare drum, which serves as a dynamic voice in her interpretation of Copeland’s classic part. The slightly shallower depth gives it a crisp, articulate attack — ideal for playing fast flams, delicate ghost notes, and tight backbeats with definition.

This snare cuts through the mix without overwhelming it, offering just the right amount of bite and sensitivity to highlight the syncopated intricacies that define Stewart Copeland’s style. Giulliana uses it with nuance, allowing space in the verses and adding energetic punctuation to the choruses — a tasteful balance of restraint and power.

Gretsch 14″ x 5″ Snare (Europe)

Zildjian Cymbals

To channel the spirit of Stewart Copeland while still bringing her own voice to the track, Giulliana assembled a versatile cymbal setup centered around the Zildjian K and FX lines. The blend of Constantinoples, K Sweets, and stacked FX cymbals gives her both musicality and controlled chaos — perfect for navigating the track’s push-pull dynamics.

Her hi-hats and ride provide the foundational articulation needed for Copeland’s signature offbeat phrasing. Meanwhile, the crashes and FX stacks add splashes of color and unpredictability — enhancing her fills and punctuating transitions with style. The stacks, in particular, give her a controlled trashiness that brings raw energy without sacrificing musicality.

The Verdict

Hearing Giulliana Merello reinterpret Stewart Copeland’s work is like watching two musical worlds collide — and create something new. She doesn’t just replicate the parts; she reimagines them. From polyrhythmic fills to explosive accents, Giulliana captures the spirit of the song while imprinting her signature sound on it.

If you ever wondered what The Police would sound like with a Latin jazz firecracker at the helm — this is it.
