In reply to Ben Norris. Maybe you've already considered this... but do you have an option to adjust the velocity curve and sensitivity of your triggers? With a liner (strait) velocity curve, your triggers output their volume in direct correlation to how hard you strike them.

EXCELLENT points… and these really are SO critical. They seem simple, but, getting these 4 things right is like icing on the cake. Even the absolute simplest beats sound totally different when these things are applied. One more I’d like to toss in… “simplicity is generally king”. What I mean by this is, so many drummers are too eager to throw in a complex beat/riff/fill in a song, simply to use it. If you listen to most popular music, however, the majority of drums beats are simplistic. Don’t muddy the water of a song – unless the song really calls for it.

If you DO use a more complex beat/riff in a song, then MAKE SURE you apply Dave’s four rules to that beat, then STICK to that beat as the backbone of the song. If you’re going to use it, perfect it and stick to it.

hey dave, just watched your ‘4 ways’ vid. excellent job. some may not know that it’s rather difficult to purposely make the errors you demonstrated. oh, we make them unconsciously when we’re not paying attention, but to try to phuck up is harder than it looks.
again, we do so, at whatever level of skill we have attained and the better you are and the longer you’ve been playing the more difficult it is to detect these imperfections in your product. but hopefully, the better we are and the longer we’ve been playing, the more graciously we can accept the observations of others around us, especially other players.
I know you haven’t seen me play, but i’ll be keeping a closer eye on those areas you’ve mentioned in my own product. thank you my young friend for bringing this issues to the discussion.

Thanks Dave. Nice concise lesson. Good stuff to think about when practicing. The rest of the band don’t seem to notice so you really have to listen to your own playing. Recording performances and listening critically has really helped me.

Thanks for this – great advice as always. As I play an e-kit, I always really struggle with the dynamics. I find it’s much harder to achieve different levels of dynamics without running into trigger problems. Playing softly and getting a consistent sound on e-drums I find is especially hard.
