One question though, at 31:20 or so Jim says “Fishbone Record” anyone know what song or record he is reffering too?

Don’t forget, although it might not be the case in this instance, in the recording software, even with little hardware such as compressors, gates, limiters, you can eliminate a lot of the ring / overtones… But that said, this kit sounds amazing and whatever they did to get the sound, well done…. and if you didn’t use any ‘voodoo mixing tricks’ please share your secrets ;)….

Over the top drummers, make listening to the groove exhausting… This lesson is by far one of my favourites, thanks guys….

Enjoyed! thanks for posting. Been following his career for years and as a country drummer myself I have always appreciated his style and smoothness…with power.

He tunes his drums lower so there aren’t any high overtones. The sound you’re hearing is a great representation of how they actually sounded in person as well.

I’m looking at this setup and listening to the great sounds, and I see absolutely no muffling on that set. Look at the mics, inches from the head, yet no ring. How can you possibly get such a great recorded sound without any muffling?

Dave is wearing in-ear monitors to protect his ears. They are custom moulded so you can’t see them.

These songs are excerpts from Jim’s books called The Nashville Number System and Song Charting Made Easy. You can find out more about both books here: http://JimRileyMusic.com
