Obrigado por mais esse carinho com os alunos de fora do país de vocês.

I loved the video, especially since you also transcribed in all topics, as I do not quite understand the language of you (English) greatly facilitated my understanding. Thank you for your affection with more students from abroad you.

Having drummed fervently in my high school years and coming back to the drums in my 50’s I think that when things seem to be hard that looking back over the last 12 years that it is amazing (in some ways) how far an old guy can really get better. Thanks Jared–great video and great subject.

Each point that you brought out definitely struck a chord with me. Thank you for your honesty and your vulnerability, knowing that the things we struggle with, you do your self. I started playing drums at the age of 14, and my first drum teacher was AJ Pero (RIP) who was a young teacher playing high school concerts at the time teaching in a local music store.
I have been playing for 39 years after I did the math, and I’ve had a number of musical and physical setbacks that have discourage me from carrying on with what I love to do the most which is play drums. Finding Drumeo has been a great asset in revitalizing my desire to learn and improve my playing again. I have watched many of the videos and have purchased the Successful Drumming System which is been a great help in getting back to basics. It’s never too late to improve on a good thing! Thanks for all you do. This is a great site.

Once i start to give them new challenges to their routine grooves, fill ins etc, they start to feel like giving up. Just to share that we as teachers have to keep motivating them to not give up. Once you feel like giving up, you shouldn’t have started at all. If you find that there is something you can’t achieve because it is too difficult, THAT MEANS IT’S A GOOD SIGN, FIX IT THEN MOVE ON. “Don’t run from your problems, I will help you overcome it.” Just sharing my thoughts…

I often think I am not getting anywhere but when I look back I at the small progresses I have made all add up.
I am 68 and going back to drumming. I find learning very hard, I always have, even as a child. So noticing any improvements in my playing makes me deleriously happy. lol
I am also learning the piano for the first time.
Most of my life I have been a Trumpet player and cornet player. I can’t play these any more because of health reasons. I really must have music of some kind in my life to keep me sane in a mad world.
Thank you Jared for all your help and inspiration.
Don

Let’s face it, at whatever level you are, drums are not an easy instrument to play, and this difficulty can make it either fun or a complete drag to practice. I towards the fun-side of upping the difficulty level of my practice and playing.

Money is a big motivating factor, spending it that is. I try to keep in mind all that I have invested in drumming: drums, cymbals, sticks, heads, mics, cables, instructional books and dvds, drum cases, gas money, lessons with two instructors, and Drumeo Edge ( and Drumeo For Teachers ). Add it all up, and it can be costly form of motivation, but it helps me.

Another technique I use to motivate myself is the reward system; this system is more long-term oriented than others, but is very effective for me. Let’s say I have a method or technique book that I want to work on. Then I pick rewards for each chapter completed ( a new pair of sticks, a new drum DVD, or an ice cream cone, etc.) and a “bigger” reward ( new drum set, a new cymbal, electronics, etc. ) for completing the book, series of videos, or all 40 rudiments.

Hope this helps motivate other drummers out there. As always…

Keep It In The Pocket,

I remember when I first saw Jojo Mayer in the early 90’s in my hometown when he was still playing with the Screaming Headless Torsos. I didn’t have a slightest clue as to who he was, but had heard of the Torsos being a kick-ass band, so I went to see them with zero expectations. After the show, as you might have guessed, Jojo had absolutely BURNT the place down! I was so overwhelmed by his technical prowess I remember thinking, for the first time in my life, I should probably consider selling my drum kit and focus on another instrument. Yet, the next morning, I was completely fired up and hell bent on getting better. And this story is really just one of dozens after dozens. Luckily, it’s really easy these days to check out some truly amazing stuff on Drumeo and YouTube, but a live situation with a badass drummer – whether it’s a gig, a clinic, whatever – should always do the trick of motivating you further. At least it does for me. 🙂

Recently I had a gig that was higher profile that my other gigs and the material was not as familiar as normal as well. I had listened and learned the material as well as I thought i needed to. I could sit down and play along with all the songs without any problem.
At the show I was met with some challenges that i didn’t foresee as well as now I’m not playing along with the songs but now I am guiding them.
This mixed with the pressure of a higher profile gig than I’m used to made me forget a lot of things, some of which I didn`t get through very well. My charts I had written as stage assistance ( in short hand and notes format ) didn’t really help me.
My motivational moment here …my lesson.
I believe I should have written my stage notes out as tabliture with complete arrangements and foot notes for each song. This would have provided all the information I needed when in that pressure moment.
You never really know what situations will confront you on stage and the more prepared you can be will only help you at that critical moment.

I particularly liked the recommendation to schedule and recording practices, rather than just generally adding them to the day’s list of things to accomplish, as well as practicing efficiently — we all create lists, so why not create a practice list and assiduous about working it? Many thanks.
So, now to my question to you and others: As a new convert to e-drums, what is the best forum for acclimating fully from a lifetime of acoustic practice/performing to an e-drum environment?

It keeps me going back for more. Believe or not, my studio is my “peaceful” place. Its where I go to relax and get away from the kids. That there is motivation enough!! Also, being an Edge Member and conversing with the community all day keeps me pretty pumped up and excited to get back home and practice. Always picking up good tips from my fellow drummers!
