Now I have another thing to work on. Two things actually. The triple stroke roll and speeding up the paradiddle. Heck I don’t even think the triple stroke roll was a rudiment when I first learned to play.

As a means of encouragement to all the ‘senior’ followers of this site, please allow me to comment: 60 yrs a working pro. 25 yrs with high profile bands and major recording artists. Hung up the stix professionally 15 years back. The net result; lost my chops. that is, until discovering this site a few years ago. Now the desire to woodshed just for the mental and physical exercise has allowed me to enjoy getting back to what was once easy for me to do. No desire to hit the road again, but love the challenge of relearning. So, what have I learned after all these years? You’re never too old to keep on keeping on. A tip of the stix to all you older dudes out there.

Get an electronic kit and put it on a sound-absorbing platform if necessary. Throw away the bucket, or, kick it already. Drumming at 59 makes me feel like I’m 59 going on 20, well, 30.

Hey, I’m 59, haven’t yet had carpal tunnel surgery, and right now I’m missing my little Pearl Rhythm Traveler POD (I’m “space-challenged”) badly as I had to put it up to move furniture into that room to replace a carpet in another room. Kit-withdrawal, yep, that’s what I’m experiencing. I have a bad back (broken 51 years ago with at least one herniated disc), a bad left-foot and -ankle (need 2 surgeries to repair torn ligament and torn tendon), bad wrists (bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome) have to use crutches half the time, have a weak, atrophying left arm (so, I practice left-handed some times, right-side hihat along with left-side hihat). Playing actually helps my circulation so much (that’s been bad since “forever”) that my wrists are actually better as a result of the exercise! You’ll love actually playing more than you’ll love watching. So, put the bucket away (or kick it already; j/k) and get busy; start with a pad and a pair of sticks (like me) and move on for there. 😀

I am going to try Dave’s method. Because I have almost given up I have some block about doing these with any speed whatsoever. I am embarrased to even try anymore. so thanks for the tip. I bought you drumming method three years ago and it keeps me busy, but I put it away now I am going to pull it out again.

I have been playing drums for years, but i never stop learning. Going to implement this today. Keep up the good work, guys.

I’m 56, just finished my second carpal tunnel surgery three days ago, work a full-time day gig, teach four nights a week plus Saturdays to currently 18 drum students, and usually play at least one night a week with one of about 6 bands. Two of my current students are in their sixties, so don’t give up, man. Making music playing drums has kept me going. I’m chomping at the bit to get a pair of sticks back in my hands and start reworking my approach to paradiddles. Paradiddles and their inversions are so fun to play – even on just a pad – and they are so liberating when you get them firmly established in your hands. I have enjoyed Jared’s teaching style and his guest tutorials for a couple of years now. I have not really focused on getting them that fast, but Mike has me wanting to go all a.m.a. now!

I love this back to basics stuff, it reinforces your foundation which makes everything above better. Definitely going back to working on that triple stroke roll! Thanks!

I really enjoy watching Jared give these tutorials. He really explains, in a way, that is very easy to follow. I’m also a little older, 56 to be exact, and I know what you mean Dave. I too suffer from physical ailments, back and bum knees, and I live in a Condominium. Can’t own a drum set here. My friends tell me, i missed my calling. This is my first time replying on a forum. But hey, why not start on a drum site. Thank you, Jared! Happy Drumming to all !!!

Though at age 51with weak wrists and 1 carpal tunnel surgery already behind me, I doubt there’s any hope for me. But watching you guys is almost as much fun, though that bucket list item remains unchecked!! Thanks again.
