The alternating beat with the bass drum looks pretty easy. The same with the snare. I wonder if that could be expanded more, without ending up as an all-encompassing beat.

A few years ago I came up with a rythm kinda like this inv olving the ride bell accented on the upbeat and including a kind of tribal tomtom rythm. its very different but same concept. you can hear it on the choruses on a track called “By the way” by my band BADTRIPMOSES. has some on my favorite Dave Weckl drumming that I’ve heard. The opening section, which is also the vamp
that Dave solos over is in (a pretty fast) 17/ 8 and Dave just kills it. The groove that you showed us starts at 3:55 in the track. I highly recommend this CD. If anybody knows a track or song where Vinnie plays this groove, PLEASE, please let us all know.
