Basically I loosen the clutch completely; I rest the small weight of my left foot on the pedal & the rod lowers slightly then I tighten the clutch.

I find that this works for me but I can’t do those jazzy hat splashes with my left foot -no matter, I rarely find a use for that sound, myself…

Should I start trying to be, well, NORMAL..?

You put in just the right amount of challenge, but add ways we can go further if we want to be creative. Keep it up!

I do use a technique where I clash the hats together but let them ring out some to provide some nuance and space filler when my hands are engaged elsewhere on the kit. I use a tapping technique on the hat pedal to get this effect. It works well.

It is to play the hi hat and allow the cymbal to speak as if it was a crash rather then choke it? Love to see how you would use that in your playing
